Avista gas bills went up about 8.5% starting Oct. 31, just as heating season ramps up

Avista's typical monthly bill climbs by $5.83

$124.8January bill, 89 therms$136.3

If you heat with gas, your bill is higher now. The Oregon Public Utility Commission says a typical residential customer using 45 therms a month will pay about $5.83 more, or about 8.5%, according to KOBI. The Grants Pass Tribune puts that at $68.64 rising to $74.47.

Cold months hit harder: Avista's January example rises $11.53. Its projected natural gas commodity cost falls 17.7%, but a smaller credit for earlier collections largely offsets that. Public purpose funding adds about $2.91 a month, and a revenue adjustment called adds $2.06. PUC Chair Letha Tawney said, "The utility doesn't run a profit on these gas costs."

  • NW Natural: roughly $6.30 more a month for a typical home
  • Cascade Natural Gas: $7.38 more a month

The Wrap

The Three Rivers Community Orchestra plays its fall concert this afternoon at the Grants Pass Performing Arts Center, and the program celebrates 250 years of American music with two guest choirs joining in. The orchestra's violin teacher, Jennifer Farrugia, serves as concertmaster. It's a mellow way to spend a cloudy-ish Sunday, and the music will be bigger than the forecast.
