  • Folgers has introduced Black Silk K Cup pods as a budget-friendly dark roast option for coffee drinkers in Grants Pass and other southern Oregon communities.   • Walmart’s shift to self-checkout kiosks at the Grants Pass store is causing confusion for shoppers who buy fresh food—customers sometimes face receipt checks at the exit and struggle with missing bagging options. The change from staffed lanes to customer-operated terminals has unsettled many and raised questions about loss prevention and shopper rights.  The Grants Pass Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • Oregon State Police is asking for help after a buck was illegally killed on private property along Northwest Vine Street near Northwest Highland Avenue last Monday night—property owner reported hearing a gunshot and discovered the deer two days later, urging anyone with information to call the tip line.  KOBI-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Nick Alexander Films began its five-day film challenge in the Rogue Valley when the team wrote the script on Monday and filmed on Tuesday and Wednesday; they are editing the film today and will finish on Friday. Owner Nick Alexander said the film blends thriller + horror styles and will be submitted to festivals such as the Ashland Independent Film Festival.  KOBI-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Southern Oregon University Board approved President Rick Bailey’s request to cut his salary by $50,000 as the school faces a $5 million deficit. His pay cut takes effect on August 1 and lasts until July 1, 2026—when his full salary of $290,000 is restored.  KOBI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grants Pass City Council will host the monthly Council Community Connection on Friday, August 8 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Rogue Roasters (610 SW 6th Street) where Councilors Seth Benham and Victoria Marshall will meet with residents to discuss local concerns.  The Grants Pass Tribune
  • Southern Oregon University’s board voted unanimously today to approve President Rick Bailey’s 20% salary cut effective August 1 to help address a $5 million budget shortfall—Bailey also requested a freeze on salary increases for the rest of the year as students and board members expressed support.  KDRV
  • Grants Pass Fire Rescue has added a new lifesaving tool called E.M.I.L.Y, a remote-controlled, battery-powered flotation craft that can reach 25 mph to quickly assist those in distress. The device was acquired through the SPIRE grant program and was tested in drills on Tuesday in the Rogue River+ it is now integrated with the fire rescue boat Miss Patty and available for any fire agency in Josephine County.  KDRV
