Good morning, Grants Pass. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 25th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local experts say donating to hometown nonprofits matters because donations go straight to community programs with low overhead and offer tax deductions—helping local families, creating jobs and strengthening our support network.  The Grants Pass Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • The Josephine Marijuana Enforcement Team and federal agents raided a home on Redwood Highway in Cave Junction, taking over 7,000 marijuana plants and 300 pounds of processed marijuana along with several code violations that may lead to property forfeiture while the suspects remain at large facing charges for unlawful manufacturing, possession, and misusing water.  KOBI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers advanced the FAIR Energy Act—now in the Senate—that would require utilities to analyze the economic impact of rate increases and ban winter power shutoffs to protect consumers from rising utility bills. Rep. Pam Marsh said the measure targets cost of living pressures and aims to hold utility companies accountable.  KOBI-TV
  • Josephine County Treasurer Mark DeYoung, elected last November with 55% of the vote, resigned yesterday via email because of personal issues—he said his resignation takes effect immediately and county staff will keep working until a replacement is found.  KOBI-TV
  • An editor at the local paper warned that county officials are trying to silence the watchdog by using secret meetings and hidden pressures—tactics that will only weaken public trust. He urged officials to work openly and follow the rules so that every issue is handled in a way that keeps the light of democracy shining.  The Grants Pass Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Team Senior Referral Services reported that local care systems have let families down by delaying medications and understaffing facilities, which has sometimes led to serious harm. The group now offers free help to guide families in choosing the right care—such as support with Medicaid and dementia care planning—so loved ones receive proper support.  The Grants Pass Tribune
