BUSINESS NEWS

  • Mt. Ashland is preparing for its winter season with a target opening on December 13 for skiing and snowboarding. Skiers can save up to $100 on season passes if purchased by October 31—pass holders who pick up passes by November 21 enter a $50 gift card drawing while the community is invited to a Winter Kick-Off Party on November 22 and the Chairlift Replacement Project is underway.  KDRV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rogue Community College will hold its $1 clothing sale at the Redwood Campus in Grants Pass on Oct. 16 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.—shoppers can buy gently used clothing, shoes, and accessories to support student scholarships. Donations are accepted until Oct. 13 at RCC campuses during business hours.  Medford Alert

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildfire season in Southern Oregon has seen 272 fires with fewer acres burned than average, which shows that firefighters have controlled the fires well. The Oregon Department of Forestry warns that warmer, windy weather next week may start fall fires—debris burns are still illegal.  KOBI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oregon’s STEP Advisory Committee will meet Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Evergreen conference room at Cartwright’s Taprock Grill & Restaurant in Grants Pass—discussing its role in salmon and trout enhancement.  Rogue River Press
  • Grants Pass City Council is considering spending $1.5 million to renovate Caveman Pool, which is leaking 30,000 gallons each day and has serious maintenance issues. The city is reaching out to aquatic partners for cost estimates—options include selling the pool to the YMCA or School District 7 if they agree to cover demolition funds.  KOBI-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Oregon Nurses Association said that if Congress does not extend Affordable Care Act tax credits, 35,000 Oregonians will lose help with premiums and over 111,000 may face higher health care costs. Nurses in Medford warned that the government shutdown adds extra pressure to hospitals and caregivers — a concern that will affect many families.  KOBI-TV
