Good morning, Grants Pass. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 25th of August.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today is the first day of school in the Grants Pass School District as elementary students attend a half-day while older students return on staggered dates starting tomorrow. Families are advised to check updated bus routes and health forms to ensure a smooth start to the academic year.  The Grants Pass Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Grants Pass City Council voted on August 18 to move forward with a $1.2 million grant process to address homelessness—5 councilors supported while 3 opposed. The city will announce the top-scoring applicant on September 3.  The Grants Pass Tribune
  • Grants Pass officials and state lawmakers claimed a public records request by the Tribune would violate privacy, but Oregon law protects all citizens’ right to ask for records—officials must either show the documents or explain why they cannot share them. The process shows that transparency is key to holding public officers accountable.  The Grants Pass Tribune
  • Grants Pass City Councilor Erich Schloegl posted an unpublicized records request on social media and accused the local newspaper of unlawfully seeking veterans’ records (the Tribune never received the request). State Representative Dwayne Yunker (who acted a day earlier) made similar claims as a recall effort against County Commissioners Chris Barnett and Andreas Blech gained momentum.  The Grants Pass Tribune
