Good morning, Grants Pass. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 21st of July.

FINANCE NEWS

  • In Southern Oregon, a person earning $36,000 has less than $500 a month left for savings after basic living expenses while a dual-income household bringing in $160,000 can save more if they follow budgeting rules—experts point out that rising costs and stagnant wages make saving a challenge for many residents.  The Grants Pass Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Josephine County are raising concerns over an alleged shadow government — a network of unelected officials and private influencers — that makes decisions behind closed doors without public oversight.  The Grants Pass Tribune
  • A new law signed on June 27 raises licensing standards and mandates that DHS start on-site investigations within 24 hours—measures designed to improve oversight for long-term care facilities in Southern Oregon. The law also requires first-time licensees to partner with qualified consultants—ensuring more experienced management and better transparency for families.  The Grants Pass Tribune
  • Three days after the Board Shanty Fire burned over 400 acres in southern Josephine County, residents said many did not get clear emergency updates from the county as only four alerts were sent through Everbridge—while deputies went door-to-door to notify those at risk. County officials now say they followed standard plans, but critics claim the mixed method left many confused during the crisis.  The Grants Pass Tribune

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The Tu Tu’ Tun Lodge offers a new staycation option on the Rogue River that gives guests a mix of luxury and quiet nature, and it is just under two hours away from Grants Pass. Visitors can enjoy fine dining from Chef Derek Piva (who uses local ingredients) and outdoor activities like river trips (part of the lodge’s seasonal offerings).  The Grants Pass Tribune
