  • A wildfire started near Board Shanty Road yesterday as official alerts were slow, and local residents took action by posting updates on social media+offering shelter and rides to neighbors in need. Community members are now urging everyone to stay prepared and watchful during wildfire season.  The Grants Pass Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • Southern Oregon residents have experienced at least six diesel truck thefts in the past six months as thieves target Ford F-250 and F-350 pickups with prized 7.3 engines—vehicles are often stolen in the early morning from driveways and secured areas and later found stripped of parts.  KDRV
  • A 40-year-old man, Bryan Beeman, was arrested in Grants Pass after a RADE investigation seized fentanyl, four firearms, cash, and an explosive device from his vehicle—followed by a second arrest when a later search connected him to dropping off drugs at Walmart.  KOBI-TV

  • USA Today is inviting wine fans to vote for Rogue Valley as the best wine region in its 10Best contest—Travel Medford’s Carole Skeeters-Stevens and Oregon Wine Board executive director Gina Bianco joined Sunrise this morning to support the effort. The public may cast one vote per day until Monday, July 21 at 9:00 a.m.  KOBI-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gavin Cougle from Grants Pass earned a place on the University of Wyoming’s Dean’s Honor Roll this spring—an honor given to students with a minimum 3.4 GPA over at least 12 credit hours. He is one of five Oregon students recognized for academic excellence, highlighting local achievement in higher education.  The Grants Pass Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire crews continued battling the Board Shanty Fire that broke out Thursday evening in Josephine County and grew to about 300 acres on Friday—officials reported a 5,000-foot hand line was set along Board Shanty Road and urged residents in several zones to follow evacuation warnings.  KOBI-TV

  • The City of Grants Pass is inviting sealed proposals from individuals, organizations, or businesses to repurpose the Reed Building—known as the Caretaker’s Cottage—in Riverside Park. City officials will review submissions after the deadline to decide how to revitalize the historic structure for public benefit.  The Grants Pass Tribune
