COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In 2022, Ron and Sue Loynds, who live on Rogue River and are the uncle and aunt to Chief Mike Hammond—head of Jackson County Fire District No. 1—donated a boat named Miss Patty to GP Rescue Unit to support its operations.  Rogue River Press

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Four small fires broke out along Riverbanks Road at mile marker 21 north of Wilderville Wednesday afternoon—ODF, Rural Metro Fire and Grants Pass Fire crews responded with engines, a water tender and a Type 2 helicopter and put all the fires out with the largest burning about a quarter acre while mopping-up continues and investigations into the cause proceed.  KOBI-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Oregon Shakespeare Festival is marking its 90th anniversary season by featuring As You Like It as a standout production—drawing attention for its fresh take on a classic work. The play is scheduled to be a key part of the season's lineup that brings Shakespeare to local audiences.  Rogue River Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Adult emerald ash borers in Oregon began emerging in early June and have peaked this month—traps capture these tiny pests that are as small as a penny.  Rogue River Press
  • Fifteen local teens spent the summer restoring nature by building trails, fire lines, and marking timber in the Rogue Valley as part of the Ashland Watershed Youth Ecological Training and Employment program—working with resource experts from several agencies. The program, now in its 13th year after being reduced from 20 to 15 students, will have its participants graduate today.  KOBI-TV

  • The Evans Valley Fire District held its board meeting on July 10 to introduce new Assistant Chief Tom McGowan—officials said the department will begin seismic work in the fall.  Rogue River Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Later this month, the local Three Rivers Youth Baseball 11U All-Star team, who won the state championship in Eugene, will travel to a regional tournament in Meridian, Idaho—where top youth teams from several states and Canada will compete. The team seeks community support to help cover travel, lodging, and tournament costs.  KOBI-TV
