COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today at 3:00 p.m., volunteers will meet near the playground at Riverside Park to begin a community cleanup with a 15-minute meeting. The cleanup will last less than one hour, and supplies such as grabbers, gloves, and bags will be provided while participants are asked not to wear open-toed shoes.  The Grants Pass Tribune
  • Downtown Grants Pass is hosting the final week of the 2025 Pop-Up Storybook Walk, where families follow a printed map from the Grants Pass Welcome Center and read pages of a children’s story in local business windows; organized by the Josephine Community Library District — Dragon Jr. leads children with clues and riddles before the exhibit moves to other communities in Josephine County for the rest of the summer.  The Grants Pass Tribune

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Rural Metro Fire said that Grants Pass had a safe Fourth of July with only a few small fires reported during the evening celebrations—none causing injuries or damage. Officials said all fires were quickly put out and urged residents to properly store leftover fireworks for New Year’s Eve.  KOBI-TV
  • Fire crews from Rural Metro Fire and the Oregon Department of Forestry responded to a pickup truck fire Friday in East Grants Pass when mechanical issues sparked flames on a BLM road at the end of Greens Creek Road — firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and contained it to about one-quarter acre.  KOBI-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Thunderstorms Monday evening caused downed trees, power outages and several small fires in Rogue Valley—emergency crews from city, state and federal agencies responded to about 20 reports while Pacific Power reported tens of thousands of outages by 8:30 p.m. Emergency Communications rerouted 911 calls and worked to restore service.  KOBI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The SBA approved disaster assistance for Oregon residents and businesses impacted by severe weather in March and April following Gov. Tina Kotek’s disaster declaration. Eligible applicants from Coos, Curry, Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath and Lane counties can receive loans covering up to $500,000 for property + $100,000 for belongings for homeowners, up to $2 million for physical damage for businesses, and economic injury loans with deadlines on August 25 and in March 2026.  KDRV
  • Josephine County Commissioner Chris Barnett faces accusations of breaching ethics in his public role and as Civil Air Patrol Commander—complaints include public outbursts, personal attacks, and elder abuse allegations. Some residents now question his trustworthiness—demanding transparent accountability in both of his roles.  The Grants Pass Tribune
  • The Josephine County Rural Fire Protection District signed an agreement with Rural Metro Fire so residents will continue to get fire protection on a subscription basis. The board will use the new setup to expand services (the next meeting is scheduled for July 14 at the Parkway Fire Station in Grants Pass).  KDRV
