- ➤ A 72-year-old man named Mark Sanfratello was arrested on June 28 in Chico for the 1983 disappearance and murder of Teresa Peroni after DNA evidence linked him to the case—he is now held in California pending extradition to Josephine County. Medford Alert
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lightning Monday night sparked several fires in Southern Oregon and Northern California as crews from Klamath and Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forests used fixed wing aircraft and smokejumpers to fight emerging blazes. Fire crews monitored new smoke reports and secured resources while a red flag warning was in effect on Tuesday afternoon (approximately 3,500 lightning strikes were reported in Northern California). - ➤ Grants Pass raised its fire danger level to high because the heat wave dried vegetation and increased wildfire risk — the City Fire Marshal set new restrictions starting at 12:01 a.m. on July 2 to limit power tool use and spark-producing activities from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day. - ➤ The U.S. Senate is debating the One Big Beautiful Bill Act which could cut $1.5 trillion in federal spending on Medicaid, SNAP, and green energy programs in Southern Oregon.
