ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Starting January 1, hotel guests will see the lodging tax rise from 1.5 percent to 2.75 percent—pending Senate approval—to fund wildlife restoration and anti-poaching patrols; the measure is expected to generate tens of millions each year while some hotel operators worry that the extra fee may prompt travelers to choose other destinations. - ➤ Grants Pass is seeking a local business owner to fill a vacant seat on the Historical Buildings and Sites Commission—candidates must own a storefront in the Central Business District and submit their application by July 3 to join a body that reviews historic renovations in downtown. Applications are available at City Administration Office or online, with initial reviews starting July 10 and final appointments set for August 6. The Grants Pass Tribune
- ➤ Oregon Housing and Community Services is giving more than $8.7 million to help veterans and their families have safe and stable homes by working with 11 community groups in 27 counties to cover up to $60,000 for down payments and repairs. The program will help veterans who meet income rules secure or improve their homes—making it easier for them to own or keep a safe place to live. The Grants Pass Tribune
- ➤ Senate Bill 174 is under review in the Oregon House and could soon allow Southern Oregon residents, including those in Grants Pass, to sue insurance companies for delayed claims, denied coverage, and misleading policies—providing a new legal tool in consumer disputes. The bill passed the state Senate and will be heard by the House, and if approved, it may ensure faster, stronger legal recourse for consumers by the end of summer. The Grants Pass Tribune
