ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Firefighters strengthened the fire lines overnight by linking hose connections and making progress on mop-up operations at the 470-acre Upper Applegate fire (10% progress has been reached). Windy conditions and a chance of rain today mean that more than 250 firefighters are ready to clear hazardous trees and extinguish hotspots (improving crew safety) as they continue their work. KDRV

- ➤ Rogue River Public Works Director Michael Bollweg said the city is moving into the design phase of its planned million-gallon water reservoir with help from engineer Loree Pryce—he added that the move comes as his department faces ongoing challenges. Rogue River Press
- ➤ Oregon has honored Chuck Mawhinney, a Marine sniper from Lake County, by passing Senate Concurrent Resolution 28 that praises his service during Vietnam and records his achievements — lawmakers from Eagle Point and Gold Beach supported the bipartisan measure and will present a copy to his family. - ➤ Josephine County Commissioners voted to override budget committee recommendations by adding an extra $774,000 to the Sheriff’s Office budget, which now stands at about $2.8 million. The extra funds will pay for two detectives, two patrol deputies, and a school resource officer—5% cuts were made in other departments to cover the cost. KOBI-TV
