Good morning, Grants Pass.

Thousands attended Boatnik at Riverside Park in Grants Pass over Memorial Day weekend on Saturday - visitors enjoyed boat races, food trucks, and rides, while fundraising raised nearly half a million dollars from over 200 sponsors to support children in Josephine County.

Elisha Young, 38, accused of embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Eugene Weekly, was arrested in early May during a traffic stop in Whitehall, Ohio—state officials declined to extradite her, leaving the Lane County case open and raising concerns among local justice advocates.

Josephine County’s elected legal counsel Wally Hicks, a former Marine captain, faces growing criticism as residents question whether he works for the county government or for the people.

Multiple lawsuits against county officials and claims of meeting law violations have raised concerns about his ability to serve as an honest watchdog.

Janelle Butterfield, a 34-year-old woman with schizophrenia, died in 2018 after her medication was stopped abruptly at Josephine County Jail, and her family filed a wrongful death lawsuit alleging negligence against the county and the for profit provider Wellpath.

Wellpath later settled with her family, filed for bankruptcy in November 2024, and emerged from restructuring under new ownership by today—while the lawsuit against the county continues.
