  • Wine lovers will join the annual Wine Stroll in downtown Grants Pass on Saturday, May 10, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Organized by the Grants Pass and Josephine County Chamber of Commerce, the event lets adults sample local wines, treats, and enjoy a photo booth—offering a boost to local businesses ahead of Mother’s Day weekend.  The Grants Pass Tribune

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Residents in Grants Pass have raised concerns about unreliable internet service from Spectrum, which reportedly imposes hidden fees+raises rates without clear notice. Local leaders have urged better oversight as federal grants meant to boost competition have not led to improvements.  The Grants Pass Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Redwood Foundation for Education will award over $700,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors in Josephine County, Rogue River, and Glendale this month. One key award is the Josephine County Home Builders Association Scholarship, which offers $2,500 per year renewable for four years (supported by donations).  KDRV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Fish and Wildlife is hosting a reptile and amphibian walk at Denman Wildlife Area—an area known for long-toed salamanders and unique wildlife. Attendees will join a guided event to learn about and explore these native species.  Rogue River Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Grants Pass will hold its first public budget meeting on May 13 at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall’s Council Chambers to review a fiscal plan for July 1 through June 30 and to get public input—residents can speak in person or follow the live broadcast.  The Grants Pass Tribune
  • The Bureau of Land Management will begin prescribed burns in southwest Oregon in May to reduce wildfire threats and restore forest functions — about 1,500 acres will be burned as temperatures rise. Residents in the Applegate Valley near Grants Pass and north of Butte Falls may see smoke.  KDRV
  • Residents are invited to join city water treatment plant and water restoration plant tours on May 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.—each one-hour session is limited to eight participants and early registration is required by calling the Public Works Department.  The Grants Pass Tribune
  • The Oregon Department of Human Services Child Welfare Director said that a broad effort is underway to improve safety for children in foster care and those referred to child welfare—officials detailed plans during a recent call.  Rogue River Press

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new report from Rentec Direct shows U.S. rents grew by 31% from 2019 to 2024 & the average monthly payment hit $1,302 with the sharpest jump between 2021 and 2022. The data from over 300,000 properties reveals that many renters, including those in Grants Pass, are facing higher housing costs.  The Grants Pass Tribune
