ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ The Grants Pass Police Department is investigating a tent fire that broke out Wednesday evening at 9:26 p.m. at the 7th Street resting site next to the police station— the fire burned the tent and part of a nearby fence without injuring anyone as officers work to determine if it was a criminal act, accident or caused by an unattended heating device. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Florin George Ionita, a Romanian national from Garden Grove, pleaded guilty to bank fraud and aggravated identity theft for placing ATM skimming devices in Medford and Maine — he was sentenced to 54 months in federal prison, will serve five years on supervised release, and must pay over $176,000 in restitution. KDRV
- ➤ Grants Pass Police and Fire officials responded to a tent fire at the 7th St. homeless resting site Wednesday night just before 9:30 p.m.—the tent and part of the fencing were destroyed with no injuries, and police launched an investigation into whether the fire was accidental or criminal. KOBI-TV

- ➤ Oregon officials are worried that federal aid may not be enough if another damaging summer arrives — senators Wyden and Merkley and Congressman Bentz push to exempt seasonal firefighters from the hiring freeze. Governor Kotek said lawmakers must provide new funds for wildfire prevention and response and she will intervene by the end of the session if necessary. KOBI-TV
- ➤ The Grants Pass City Council is looking to transfer ownership of Caveman Pool—built in the 1950s and leaking about 30,000 gallons of water a day after canceling a $6.5 million replacement plan. The council has asked the city manager to find an organization, like the Grants Pass Family YMCA or the school district, to take over the pool. KOBI-TV
- ➤ Grants Pass city council voted six to two on Wednesday night to add two new resting sites for people without homes at 714 NW 6th and 711 NW 6th. The sites add 55 and 44 spaces and came after a judge stopped the removal of camping areas until 150 spaces were provided—city officials will ask the court to lift the order when the sites open. KDRV
- ➤ At a Wednesday night meeting, the Grants Pass city council approved a temporary resolution to add new homeless camping sites at existing locations on 6th St. and 7th St., at the city employee parking lot on A St., and at OnTrack’s former Outpatient Facility parking lot—residents stressed their safety concerns and called for more law and order. Police Chief Warren Hensman and City Manager Aaron Cubic warned that the close sites may heighten potential safety risks for nearby residents and businesses. KOBI-TV
