Good morning, Grants Pass. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 9th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Grants Pass is home to newly crowned Ms. Wheelchair Oregon, Alice Diehl, who uses her title to speak up for people with disabilities and the unhoused community. She will represent Oregon in the Ms. Wheelchair America pageant in Michigan later this year — and she hopes to bring more attention to hard-to-serve issues.  KDRV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rentec Direct, a tech company based in Grants Pass, was named one of Oregon’s 100 Best Green Workplaces by Oregon Business magazine for its strong commitment to sustainability. Since buying its headquarters in 2018, the company has installed a solar energy system, energy-efficient lighting, and a paperless office to cut its environmental impact—continuing to lead in green practices.  The Grants Pass Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southern Oregon Head Start will close half its services this Friday and will shut down completely on April 18 if the federal funds remain frozen — leaving 917 children without help and affecting 367 staff — as Peter Buckley said no explanation has been given for the missing payments.  KOBI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Scherf and Councilor Marshall will attend a community coffee hour at Grants Pass Starbucks—201 NE Terry Lane—on Friday, April 11th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Residents can bring their questions and concerns to engage in a relaxed discussion with local officials.  The Grants Pass Tribune
  • The Grants Pass City Council voted to add two new homeless camp sites after a judge granted a Preliminary Injunction that requires the city to increase ADA accessible camping to serve up to 150 people—city officials said the A St. site will be ready next week while the former OnTrack facility site will open in late April or early May. The move comes after the council had recently reduced the number of camping sites and now must comply with the court order.  KOBI-TV
  • ODOT is planning upgrades to the 98-year-old bridge over the Rogue River in Gold Hill by widening its deck from 20’ to 24’ and updating the ADA-compliant walkway—an online open house will allow residents to view the timeline and offer input on historic details—while keeping pedestrian access open during repairs.  KDRV
  • Josephine Community Library faces an uncertain future as the county will not negotiate a lease renewal, so the library will have to vacate its building by December 31st. Local residents worry that the move will disrupt access to essential services like storytimes and public computer access — concerns that have sparked community debate.  The Grants Pass Tribune
