Good morning, Grants Pass. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 21st of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Grants Pass and Josephine County Chamber of Commerce will bring back Concerts in the Park at Riverside Park after city council approved the change from the fairgrounds. The first concert is on June 10th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and the series will run every Tuesday evening through July 15th except July 1st.  KOBI-TV
  • The editor explains that recalls in small towns may divide neighbors and drain funds — and suggests alternatives like citizen oversight boards and public censure to hold officials accountable without high costs.  The Grants Pass Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local parent Lindsey Galbreath is calling for a change in policy after her family's request to leave Eagle Point School District 9 was denied because her children were not enrolled despite being homeschooled. She plans to meet with Superintendent Andy Kovach to appeal the decision — she believes other homeschooling families in the area deserve better options.  KOBI-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Republic Services invites Josephine County residents to a spring cleanup event scheduled for Saturday, April 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Merlin Transfer Station on 1749 Merlin Rd.—Residents can dispose of materials like tires, household trash, yard debris, scrap metal and electronics, with free disposal for up to 1,000 tires and one cubic yard of trash.  The Grants Pass Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Josephine County Judge will hear a preliminary injunction on Tuesday brought by Disability Rights Oregon that could let unhoused people camp nearly anywhere in Grants Pass — if passed, the city will only be able to enforce camping rules in two parks until the dispute is resolved and a temporary restraining order remains in effect until March 29. Unhoused residents argue that the current sites do not meet the legal space requirements for the number of people in need.  KOBI-TV
  • Oregon voters established a psilocybin framework with Ballot Measure 109 in 2020 to address mental health needs. Grants Pass City Council approved an ordinance on January 4, 2023 to allow psilocybin service centers—prompting questions on whether local residents had enough information when making their decision.  The Grants Pass Tribune
  • Starting May 7, 2025, Oregon driver's licenses will not work for boarding flights or entering secure federal buildings—residents must visit the DMV with proper documents and pay an extra fee to obtain a Real ID with a star. Those who delay may face longer wait times and last-minute processing issues.  The Grants Pass Tribune

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Market statistics show that home listings in Jackson County have been falling since October—but experts expect more homes to be listed this spring, which may lead buyers to decide faster. Lawmakers proposed a bill on March 18 to repeal the wildfire hazard map—but buyers should ask insurers how risks are assessed since companies use their own tools.  KDRV
