ECONOMY NEWS

  • The federal government authorized a 172-million-barrel release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to ease fuel price hikes amid Middle East tensions; the drawdown will begin soon and last four months. Oregon drivers may see price relief—officials say benefits might be limited if conflicts persist.  The Grants Pass Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Grants Pass School District 7 named longtime educator Jason Garcia as the new principal of Grants Pass High School. Garcia — who has served the district since 2000 as a teacher, dean, and assistant principal — will start his role on July 1.  KOBI-TV
  • Rogue River Jr. Sr. High School's Kinetic Kittens team competed in First Tech Challenge Robotics this year with help from adviser Christine Renfrew, who won the Oregon Compass Award for her work reforming the team.  Rogue River Press
  • Officer David Gomez will hold talks on social media safety at Illinois Valley High School in Cave Junction on Mar. 16 and at Hidden Valley High School in Grants Pass on Mar. 17 (teaching parents techniques for age-appropriate conversations with their kids).  KOBI-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grants Pass approved the Parker’s Place Village shelter project, awarding Elk Island Trading Group a $1.2 million grant to create 152 beds in renovated shipping containers next to the MINT building. The site (over one acre) will open by June 1 to offer safe shelter and wraparound services.  KOBI-TV
  • Federal officials announced the new External Provider Scheduling system is now operational at every VA facility, letting veterans in Grants Pass and Southern Oregon communities book care appointments faster; the system connects VA staff with local providers to reduce delays, and officials expect more providers to join throughout 2026.  The Grants Pass Tribune
