ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local grocers are selling bananas for about 25 cents per pound today, down from ranges of 56 to 82 cents per pound a year ago; the decline is driven by improved production, lower shipping costs, and loss-leader pricing.  The Grants Pass Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Josephine Community Library launched its 2026 Young Writers and Illustrators Contest, inviting children ages 5 through 10 to submit a story and illustration by Saturday, Jan. 17 for a Summer Reading Program display. Selected works will also join a Community Storybook Walk (Grants Pass, Illinois Valley, Williams, Wolf Creek).  The Grants Pass Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Before the Peach Bowl, Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read shared a playful wager with Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales, rooting for the Ducks through a light exchange (Oregon hazelnuts vs Indiana popcorn). His message reminded locals that public officials share the same hopes as everyone else.  The Grants Pass Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • The VA is expanding its health care network nationwide with new outpatient and specialty clinics to reduce travel times and ease appointment backlogs. Veterans in Grants Pass and nearby areas can soon find improved access to care with enhanced scheduling and telehealth options.  The Grants Pass Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mt. Ashland reopened today with limited terrain and services as early-season snowfall continues to fall. Guests can access select lifts (Sonnet, Lithia, and Comer) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with tickets starting at $18 while further access awaits improved conditions.  The Grants Pass Tribune
  • Rogue River’s Nick Nunez tried to make a move against Sutherlin’s Riley Cortes in the first half of the Chieftains’ Dec. 30 home game, and Sutherlin won 42-20 (photo by Brian Mortensen).  Rogue River Press
